Dedication of the Dyson Family Floor for Ophthalmology

On June 24, 2008, the 11th floor of the Weill Greenberg Center was dedicated as the Dyson Family Floor for the Ophthalmology Department of Weill Cornell Medical College. Robert R. Dyson, President of the Dyson Foundation, Antonio M. Gotto, Jr. MD, D. Phil., Dean of the Medical College, and Donald J. D'Amico, MD, Chairman of the Ophthalmology Department, presided in a ceremony that included medical college and hospital faculty and staff.

Mr. Dyson spoke of his mother's successful treatment for bilateral retinal detachment many years ago by Dr. D. Jackson Coleman, former department chair. He commented that nothing had terrified his usually stoic mother than the fear of losing her vision. Margaret M and Charles H. Dyson were exceptionally generous to the department, the Weill Cornell Medical College, and Cornell University; in Ophthalmology alone, the Dyson Foundation has funded the Margaret M. Dyson Vision Research Institute, the Dyson Professorship in Ophthalmology, and many other initiatives.

Dean Gotto thanked Mr. Dyson for the generosity of the Family's foundation, now commemorated in a beautiful dedication above each patient check-in area. He said that the extraordinary and continued generosity of the Dyson Foundation has been a shining light for Cornell University and for Weill Cornell Medical College.

Dr. D'Amico conducted a tour of the facility, and even performed a third generation optical coherence tomographic (OCT) scan of Mr. Dyson (which was reassuringly normal.) Dr. D'Amico thanked Mr. Dyson and Dean Gotto for working together to create this extraordinary new departmental facility. He pledged every effort to develop the Weill Cornell Department of Ophthalmology into a refined and sophisticated instrument for patient care, teaching and research.
